Manolo el Xolo

Xoloitzcuintlus Rockerus · A Xoloitzcuintle from Central Mexico

“Friends take care of each other”

Whaaaat's up?! I'm Manolo! The most rock 'n' roll xolo on this side of Mexico. What's that? Why don't I have any fur? Well, because that's how I was born, buddy! I'm a xoloitzcuintle! My skin is soft and warm, like a hug that never ends. So don't worry about me: I don't need a mane to be a rock star! Although, just between us, sometimes I wonder how I'd look with a punk mohawk. Heh heh!

We xolos are Mexican, and we've been keeping people company for a veeeery long time. Like, really, really long! For thousands of years, our ancestors walked alongside the people of these lands. The ancient peoples loved us and cared for us in a very special way. And there's a very old legend that says xolos accompanied our humans even on the long journey to Mictlán, the land of the dead in Mexica tradition. Because when a xolo loves someone, he walks with them to the very end of the road! Well, that's what the legend says… and I think it's an incredible story of friendship!

And what am I like? Well, look, I'm not the type to go barking at every little thing. I'd rather watch, listen and keep an eye on what's happening around me. Sometimes, when you see this serious face, you might think I'm a tough dog. And yeah, I've got my strong side! But I also have a huge heart, full of love. I'm like a rock song that starts with a powerful guitar and ends up giving you a hug!

Because for me, there's something that matters more than any concert: MY FRIENDS! Is a friend feeling sad? I sit down beside her. Is a buddy scared? I'm right here, pal! Does someone little feel lonely? I make a little space next to me. You don't always need words to help someone; sometimes it's enough to be there, to listen and to let them know they're not alone. And that is truly powerful!

And since every good rocker xolo has his soundtrack, I've got a song all about friendship! It's called «Los Amigos se Cuidan» (Friends Take Care of Each Other), and I have two versions so you can pick your favorite: a soft rock one, mellow, for bobbing your head side to side; and a metal one, for pulling your very best rocker face! Which one will you play first?

«Los Amigos se Cuidan»Soft rock (in Spanish)
«Los Amigos se Cuidan»Metal for kids (in Spanish)

And while you listen, I want to suggest something. Think of someone you love very much: your best friend, your brother, your grandma, or someone at school who could use some company. What could you do today to show them you care? Maybe give them a hug, invite them to play, listen to them, or simply say: «I'm here with you». Because you don't need superpowers to be a great friend. Sometimes, the bravest thing is to walk up to someone and ask: «Are you okay? Do you want me to stay with you?».

Turn up the volume, wiggle those ears, and may there always be plenty of rock… and friendship!

For grown-ups

The Xoloitzcuintle is one of the oldest dog breeds in the Americas, with roots in Mexico since pre-Hispanic times. Its name is linked to Xólotl, a deity in Mexica tradition.

A Mexica legend tells that the Xoloitzcuintle accompanied people on their journey to Mictlán, the world of the dead, helping souls cross a river. This made it a symbol of companionship and loyalty. It's best shared as a cultural legend, not a literal historical fact.

In the series, Manolo represents empathy, loyalty and mutual care. He teaches that being there for someone doesn't always mean fixing their problems: sometimes it's enough to listen, respect and simply be present. And that asking for help doesn't make us any less strong. With Manolo, little ones discover that friendship is a form of bravery.
