Güagüa Chihuahua

Chihuahuis Valientis · A Chihuahua from Northern Mexico

“I can do it, I can do it!”

Hiii! I'm Güagüa! And yes, yes, I already know what you're thinking: «What a teeny-tiny little dog!». Hee hee! Well, let me tell you a secret: I'm one of the tiniest dogs in the whole world, but I have a GIANT, GIANT heart! So big that sometimes it barely fits in my chest! Well… that's what I think!

My family is Mexican, and our story began a loooong, long time ago, back when cities as we know them didn't even exist yet. Just imagine! The ancestors of my ancestors were already trotting across these lands many, many generations ago. So even though I fit in a little backpack, I carry a huge history with me! I'm tiny on the outside, but inside I'm full of adventures, courage and Mexican pride.

I come from Northern Mexico, where there are enormous deserts, the sun is as hot as a griddle, and the wind blows so hard it feels like it wants to mess up even your ideas. Whooosh! Maybe that's why I'm so curious and adventurous. I love to explore, discover new things and poke my little nose wherever something interesting is happening. And have you seen my ears? They're HUGE! They're ready to hear anything: the wind, the tiny footsteps of an ant, a little bird singing… and even an adventure coming from the other side of the world! Okay, I still have to double-check that last one. Woof!

But let me tell you something I don't always share with others: even though I'm very brave, sometimes I get scared too. Yes, me! When something is new or I don't know what's going to happen, my little paws start to tremble: tippy, tippy, tap! And for a tiny moment I think: «What if I can't? What if I mess up?». But then I remember that being brave doesn't mean having no fear. It means trying even when we feel a little nervous! So I take a deep breath, I count one… two… three… and I take a little step. If I'm still scared, I take one more step. And that way, little by little, I discover I can do so much more than I ever imagined!

Because being tiny doesn't make me less important, less capable, or less adventurous. Quite the opposite! I can squeeze into little nooks where others don't fit, discover hidden treasures and reach surprising places! And if something is ever too big for me, that's okay! I can ask for help, practice and try again. I don't have to do everything all by myself to prove how brave I am.

And you know what I do when I need a little boost of courage? I put on music and start to dance! I have a special song for those days when things feel hard or when the urge to try is hiding under the bed. It's called «¡Yo puedo!, ¡Yo puedo!» (I Can, I Can!) and it's a cheerful cumbia for moving your paws, shaking your ears and remembering that even when something is tricky, we can learn if we keep trying!

And now I want us to do something together. Put a little paw on your heart, take a deep breath and repeat after me:

I am tiny, I am mighty.I can feel scared and be brave at the same time.I can make mistakes and try again.Little by little, step by step, I'll get there!I can do it! I CAN DO IT!

Did you say it? Wooof! That deserves a wiggly-tail celebration! So whenever something feels too hard, too new or unfamiliar, remember me. It doesn't matter if you're the tiniest in the group, if you need more time, or if you're still learning. Everyone has their own pace and their own strengths. What matters is taking that first little step, trusting yourself, and asking for help when you need it.

Because the size of your paws doesn't decide the size of your dreams!

For grown-ups

The Chihuahua is recognized as the smallest dog breed in the world and has deep roots in Mexico. Its history is connected to ancient dogs of pre-Hispanic communities, among them the techichi. And here's a real fact: Chihuahuas have no idea how small they are, so they'll stand up to a Great Dane without thinking twice.

Güagüa turns that history into a message kids can relate to: being small doesn't mean being less capable. Her brave personality is a way to work on confidence, perseverance and managing fear, without suggesting you have to be fearless all the time: feeling nervous about the unknown is normal, and you face it step by step, breathing, practicing and asking for help.

Her song reinforces the idea with music and movement. Because bravery isn't about getting everything right the first time, but about discovering that we can learn, grow and move forward at our own pace, no matter our size.
